Job Description
Main Duties:
Overseeing plant operation including: basic maintenance and cleaning, inspections, repairs, coordinating with management for major repairs/improvements.  Feeding plant with seed and adjustments for crop, variety, and seed quality. Hiring, training, and overseeing necessary support staff.  Bagging and palletizing seed, pallet handling. Coordinating inbound/outbound shipments, and current storage. 
 
Administrative:
Coordinating with management to establish cleaning schedule to fulfill contract requirements.  Keeping detailed records of all processing including but not limited to: varieties, lots, seed testing, shipments, on hand storage, supplies, etc.
 
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Seed Cleaning & Warehouse Mgmt
  • Seed cleaning on various types of plant equipment such as indent cylinders, disc separators, gravity tables, scalpers.
  • Maintains receiving, processing, warehousing, and distribution operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.  Manages all aspects of receiving and shipping by logging in products/materials received as well as preparing outgoing shipments.
  • Prepares and fills customer orders accurately in accordance with order details (such as tagged lots, palletized, shrink wrapped, etc), and completes appropriate paperwork for customer and/or internal as needed.
  • Ensure seed cleaning/processing forecast will be met.
  • Identify and develop and/or implement quality procedures.
  • Ongoing monitoring of activities to identify ways to improve efficiency and reduce expenses.
  • Maintain condition of Warehouse
  • Maintain physical condition, cleanliness and organization of warehouse by inspecting equipment; issuing repair requests and requisitions for replacement as needed. 
  • Performs basic servicing and maintenance on equipment and buildings.  If more specialized work is needed, work with vendor to have them provide repair/maintenance.
  • Maintain an updated and accurate maintenance/repair log on all machines and equipment for reference purposes. Oversee and document the service schedule for each piece of equipment.  
  • Perform daily and weekly inspections of equipment to catch anything that could be done to prevent breakdowns/larger issues.
  • Management
  • Maintains warehouse staff by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure location is operating within business standards, safety policies and budgets. 
  • Ensure compliance with all seed/product regulations.
  • Comply with State and Federal Safety requirements and promote company programs that can minimize injuries, lost time, seed loss and damage.  Reports any dangerous conditions to management immediately
  • Administrative
  • Manage cleaned seed inventory levels.
  • Monitor and verify correct inventories of supplies are maintained for seed cleaning and packaging as well as location supplies.  Order supplies as needed after approval from management.
  • Prepare an annual seed plant warehouse budget; schedule expenditures; analyze variances; initiate corrective actions.
  • Create and maintain detailed paper and/or electronic records (as requested) of all seed received/ cleaned/ shipped to ensure state and federal guidelines are met
  • Perform weekly or as needed check in’s with management team to ensure operations and projects are on track and being completed/managed within budget. 
  • Work with management team to set cleaning/processing schedule for seed to be cleaned and adjusts as needed.  Communicate with management team on a weekly basis (or as needed) for cleaning priority changes and any issues.
  • Performs seed sampling and coordinate with seed labs as needed.
  • Interact with seed cleaning customers, truck drivers and companies arranging for seed receipts and shipments in a congenial and professional manner.
  • Miscellaneous:
  • Attend and participate at company meetings as requested.
  • Assist with farm operation tasks as needed during seed plant slow and down time/off season.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Qualification Requirements:
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work with minimal oversight from Management.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to prioritize work to meet deadlines.  Must have ability to do accurate detailed work under time constraints and deadlines and must have ability to adjust to seasonal surges in workload.

  • Must have ability to safely operate common processing equipment such as canvas machine, velvet rolls, indent cylinders, gravity feed, aspirator, disc separators, seed cleaner, bagger and scales.
  • Must have ability to safely operate forklifts and other warehouse equipment such as front end loader, pallet jack, hand truck, shrink wrapper, and belt loader. 
  • Ability to drive 18 wheel truck (onsite only) to feed pit with seed.
  • Must have good organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have ability and discipline to interface professionally and effectively with management and fellow employees under sometimes stressful situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Good physical condition allowing for extended amounts of  time standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing and stooping, carrying, shoveling, kneeling, crouching or crawling.  Employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds or more. 
  • Must be able to legally work in the USA.
  • Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
 
Additional Desired Skills (ideal but not required):
  • Previous experience with maintaining and operating a seed cleaner.
  • General seed industry experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of agricultural processing, and handling as well as having a grasp on local varieties of seed and agricultural products which are being processed such as Tall Fescue and Clover seed.
  • Experienced and competent in the pertinent operation and navigation of VFDs.
  • Experienced and competent in the interaction, operation of equipment through and navigation of HMIs.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable regarding the process of packaging agricultural products in preparation for shipment.
  • Familiarity with automated packaging and palletizing systems (experience preferred).
  • Previous management experience or classes/trainings.
  • Ability to read, write and/or speak Spanish as related to work tasks and environment.
 
Education/Training/Licenses:
  • High school diploma is required.  College degree is preferable (or equivalent job experience). 
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • CDL or Farm endorsement is a plus.
 
Supervision:
  • Position reports to company Employee Manager.
  • Position is responsible for managing any Seed Plant employees and/or Contract Labor as needed.
 
Working Conditions & Environment:
  • The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne dust particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
 
Typical Work hours:
  • Winter: 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM (5 days a week)
  • Spring: 7:00 AM to 4/4:30 PM (5 days a week)
  • Fall: 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM (5 to 6 days a week)
  • Harvest: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM (7 days a week)
 
Average hours per week:
  • Mid October – Mid July: 40-50
  • Mid July to September: 55-65
 
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly Pay: commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Paid Holidays: New Year’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day
