Job Description
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
 
Position Title:  Executive Director, Visit Newberg, Inc. 
Supervisors:  Visit Newberg Board of Directors
Position: Regular Full-Time. May be required to work weekends and holidays.
Pay Range: $65,000-$75,000, plus benefit package
 
Visit Newberg
Visit Newberg is a new 501c6 organization whose purpose is to encourage tourism in Newberg and the surrounding area. Tourists are defined as those who travel at least 50 miles from home or stay overnight at their destination. Funding for the organization come from a contract with the City of Newberg that utilizes transient lodging tax funds.
 
Newberg
Newberg is the first destination in Oregon wine country. More vineyards and wineries are concentrated around Newberg (population 24,000) and neighboring Dundee (3,500) than anywhere else in the state. Interspersed between the many tasting rooms in downtown Newberg are multiple coffee houses, galleries and shops. Ideally located between Portland and the Oregon Coast, the town is home to a world-class wine resort, award-winning restaurants and George Fox University. Situated across the Willamette River from the 1841 birthplace of Oregon Country, the town also provides tours of President Herbert Hoover’s boyhood residence.
  
General Statement of Duties:
 
This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to increase awareness of the attractions, culture, history and special events of Newberg and approved partners, resulting in increased tourism and overnight stays. 
 
Duties and responsibilities:
 
  • Prepare an annual budget and marketing plan for Board of Directors and City Council approval
  • Conduct and analyze area market research
  • Facilitate the development of a master brand for Newberg area
  • Develop and maintain a Visit Newberg website
  • Manage online advertising campaigns and social media 
  • Plan and implement effective and aggressive tourism promotion programs 
  • Assist in developing and supervise the production of marketing collateral needed to successfully promote tourism 
  • Write and distribute press releases as needed  
  • Develop strategies for new markets and advertising materials for Newberg and approved partners
  • Manage familiarization tours with media and members of the travel trade
  • Provide reports as required for Board of Directors and City of Newberg
  • Develop strong working relationship with key personnel from area lodging, meeting and convention facilities.  Maintain a well-informed working knowledge of all hotels, attractions and services available in the area
  • Coordinate and collaborate with local event and activities organizers to help them promote their events 
  • Represent Newberg region as appropriate with local, state and federal organizations associated with tourism 
  • Attend tourism-related workshops, conference and training seminars
  • Identify, prepare and submit grant applications related to tourism
  • Assist appropriate organizations by directing them to grant application opportunities and provide support.
  • Assist the Board of Directors in maintaining non-profit status
 
 
Education:  
Bachelor degree in marketing or related field
 
Minimum Tourism Skills and Experience Required:
At least three years of recent progressive marketing or tourism experience which includes the following skills and abilities: 
  • Considerable knowledge of marketing and the tourism industry
  • Working knowledge of volunteer management
  • Strong and effective communication and public relation skills
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Social media management experience
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with city staff, the public, and business community and to present ideas effectively, verbally and in writing 
  • Ability to do community outreach and make public presentations
  • Graphic design and web design skills preferred 
  • Media relations experience preferred
 
Additional Requirements:
 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, office record keeping and recording, and office machines.
  • Interested in people; possesses a positive self-image; confident but not arrogant; approachable; a team player; respects people; understand the importance of first impressions
  • Calculator, typing/word processing, data entry skills for computer, and attention to detail. 
  • Good vision and hearing. 
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds
  • Successful candidates should reside in the Newberg area or be willing to relocate
